Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage

Milwaukee’s Asian and Pacific Islander community has deep roots in the city from Hmong families who came to the Midwest following the Vietnam War to a more recent rise in Asian cultures such as Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino, and Indian. The Asian and Pacific Islander community has and continues to add to the beautiful fabric of our city.

Cultural Institutions

Cricket Academy of Chinese Language and Culture
The Cricket Academy of Chinese Language and Culture helps families connect to Chinese culture through language instruction, folktales, art, and song.

Hmong American Friendship Association Museum
The Hmong American Friendship Association Museum displays an art collection and offers seminars on a variety of topics including Hmong needle artwork, clothing, music, and dance.

Islamic Society of Milwaukee
The Islamic Society of Milwaukee is a dynamic center serving the religious, educational, and social needs of the Muslim community, promoting good citizenship and building relations with other communities.

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial
Located at the Milwaukee County Courthouse is a public sculpture paying homage to activist Mahatma Gandhi. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee shares the sculpture’s story.

Milwaukee Chinese Community Center
The Milwaukee Chinese Community Center hosts annual Chinese New Year's celebrations, as well as the Dragon Boat Festival in August.

Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition
The mission of the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition is “to lead positive community change through advocacy, dialogue, education and outreach, using faith-based values to ensure dignity and equity for all.”

Milwaukee Public Museum

Mother Teresa Memorial
Though of Albanian descent herself, Mother Teresa was a dedicated servant to the people of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India. A statue in memory of the saint stands on Marquette University’s campus.
